How to Break in Carom, 3-Cushion and Pool Billiards

Detailed guide to break shot techniques in carom (libre), 3-cushion and pool billiards — ball setup, angles, power and tips.

The break shot is a foundational technique in all types of billiards. A well-executed break creates favorable positions from the very first shot.

What is a break shot?

The break is the opening shot of a match that scatters the initial ball formation. A good break effectively disperses balls and creates favorable positions for subsequent shots.

Carom (libre) break technique

Strike the cue ball into the side of the red ball at approximately 45 degrees:

  • Cue ball on left → hit right side of red ball + left english.
  • Cue ball on right → hit left side of red ball + right english.

3-cushion break technique

  • Direct strike: Place the ball at the head, strike decisively.
  • Strike opponent's ball: Push opponent's ball to a disadvantageous position.
  • Hand break: A special technique using your hand instead of the cue.

Pool break shot technique

  1. Rack balls tightly in the triangle.
  2. Position hand ~25cm from cue ball.
  3. Strike decisively with confidence.
  4. Power from forearm, not shoulder.
  5. Keep butt of cue low to prevent jumping.
  6. Aim at center of cue ball.
